»°[♠] As a child, Abarai Renji was part of a poor social order in SS [Area 78, Inuzuri, South Alley of the flowing spirits] which held little to no financial stability. Surviving on a daily basis turned into a 'laborious' task and was even considered a matter of life or death for the abandoned youth which included more than three fourths of the SS children. Though the number of forgotten adolescence in Soul Society were high, the death rate could be considered within the same boundary, which in turn, resulted in many lives lost due to sickness or even starvation. Renji, born into the chaos of orphaned poverty without choice as most everyone was, lived with few other souls which he allowed himself to confide in, one of them being [Rukia who would later be adopted into the noble Kuchiki family.] Having had a childhood full of privation and the pain of letting one too many friends go, Renji [and Rukia] prepared a pact to [both] become Shinigami within the closed gates and bare better live[s] than the one[s] [they] had been currently living. No sooner had the promise been made did [both] begin [their] education. As time passed, [Rukia] was then accepted into the noble Kuchiki family while Renji, with fake admiration and true resentment, praised his lifelong friend. Continuing with his own education, Renji soon caught the attention which he desired in short, becoming a Shinigami [who would later be promoted to Sixth division Vice Captain under the order of Kuchiki Byakuya, a dignified descendant of the pure Kuchiki bloodline and rightful heir to the noble Kuchiki family]. Renji would forever hold a mutual admiration/resent for his captain [for reasons including the newly adopted Rukia], yet be bound to the loyalty he was and still is forced to bear while embracing the role of Fukutaichou.[♠] °« ~~~

Zabimaru (蛇尾丸) is Renji Abarai's zanpakutō. It is one of the only two zanpakutō to be shown in their materialized form. The other zanpakutō being Ichigo's Zangetsu. Zabimaru is a nue (also sometimes called a Japanese chimera), hence the name of the sword (Zabi = snake tail). The initial release (shikai) command for his zanpakutō is hoero (咆えろ, howl!). The shikai form of Zabimaru is a sword-whip hybrid, with multiple pick-like blades extending from its cutting edge. In this form, it can be used as both a regular sword or, more commonly, as a sword-whip, similar to the one used by Ivy Valentine in Soul Calibur. Renji has a limit of three consecutive attacks before having to bring the segments of Zabimaru back together for recovery. At some point, he also learned to execute a one-shot omnidirectional attack called Higa Zekkō with Zabimaru even when the whip was broken, using his spiritual power to levitate the segments and hurl them at an enemy from all sides. However, this attack hurts Zabimaru. In the anime, Renji is also able to use Higa Zekkō during his final release (bankai). Hihiō Zabimaru -- Enlarge -- Hihiō Zabimaru -- Zabimaru's final release (bankai) looks like a giant skeletal snake, complete with a snapping head that looks to be the size of a small car. It is called Hihiō Zabimaru (狒狒王蛇尾丸, lit, Baboon King Zabimaru). It can both attack with its body and block attacks with its segmented vertebrae. This form does not need to have all the segments intact in order to fight, and is connected by the power of the user, making it extremely difficult (but not impossible) to damage or destroy. As Renji himself comments, "Zabimaru is bulky, but enduring." After being able to better control Hihiō Zabimaru, Renji developes the special technique Baboon Bone Cannon (狒骨大砲, hikō taihō?), which essentially fires a dense reiatsu blast from Hihiō Zabimaru's mouth. He first demonstrates this technique against the arrancar Il Forte Grantz.
